The article explores the relationship between the development of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and poverty levels in the Central Federal District (CFD) of Russia. The authors analyze data from 2010 to 2024 using correlation and regression analysis to assess the impact of SMEs on the socio-economic situation in the district’s regions. The study reveals a significant inverse relationship between the number of SMEs and poverty levels in the capital and surrounding regions, such as Moscow and Moscow Oblast, where small businesses actively contribute to poverty reduction by creating jobs and increasing the population’s income. However, in regions located at a moderate distance from the capital, such as Kursk and Ivanovo Oblasts, the impact of SMEs on poverty was statistically insignificant. In more distant areas from Moscow, such as Voronezh and Smolensk Oblasts, the relationship exists but is less pronounced. The results highlight the importance of comprehensive support for SMEs, especially in remote and less developed regions, including improving infrastructure, increasing access to credit resources, and developing educational programs for entrepreneurs.
