A pressing economic challenge associated with the use of artificial intelligence (AI) is rising unemployment at the international and national levels. From an institutional perspective, AI is a meta-institution with global characteristics. This is due to its networked nature and its ability to form compliance systems. Unemployment is closely linked to the «digital divide,» which creates unequal opportunities in the development and use of AI. Lack of access to modern digital technologies has a detrimental impact on education, job searches, and social networking, leading to further social stratification. This article examines the main potential unemployment scenarios associated with the active implementation of AI in manufacturing and services. Artificial intelligence has a significant impact on human capital. In 2024, the International Monetary Fund identified four areas of this impact: labor displacement, complementarity, increased labor productivity, and increased income from capital. An analysis of the impact of AI on human capital in modern Russian conditions is provided. The problem of unemployment in education has specific aspects. There is a shortage of teaching staff, especially school teachers in the provinces, but young people are reluctant to work there due to low salaries and heavy workloads. Universities are hard to find positions with decent pay and stable employment. There is significant income inequality among those in the same profession. Having a similar higher education diploma does not guarantee equal pay. The use of AI creates serious ethical and legal challenges, which often lead to increased inequality and discrimination. The transformation of artificial intelligence into the primary tool of production leads to workers being reoriented toward secondary functions.
